Soul Tech-Mike Show - Title dates of show.png

Step into a world where discarded technology finds new life as profound artistic expression.

In "Tech Soul," Mike Silverman unveils a captivating collection crafted from upcycled hard drive platters and motherboards. Experience the meticulously crafted transformation of the digital into the deeply human, as sleek circuits and reflective surfaces explore the nuances of our inner lives, the complexities of human connection, and the speculative future of intelligence beyond our own. This exhibition invites you to reconsider the lifecycle of materials and the boundless potential for art to illuminate our evolving existence. A true testament to innovation, each piece offers a unique reflection, literally and figuratively, on what it means to be human in a technologically advanced age.

About the Artist

Silverman Headshot med res.jpg

MIKE SILVERMAN

Mike Silverman is an emerging artist known for his intricate sculptures crafted from discarded technology, including hard drive platters and printed circuit boards. His unique artistic practice merges an inherent affinity for industrial art with the beauty he perceives in technology & remnants.

Silverman’s journey into art marks a distinctive second act in his professional life. Holding an undergraduate degree in religion and a master’s degree in business, his formal art education is limited to a

single stone carving class taken decades ago at the Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle, WA. In keeping with this non-traditional path, Silverman is entirely self-taught in his chosen medium, independently developing all aspects of his design and fabrication processes.

Approximately three years ago, Silverman began to systematically transform obsolete technological components. He meticulously shapes these materials using a scroll saw, creating nesting fragments that are then bolted and/or glued together to form the building blocks of his sculptural works. The highly reflective nature of hard drive platters, a primary component, introduces a dynamic element to his art, allowing the pieces to shift in tone and texture as the viewer moves around them.

An actively exhibiting artist, Silverman has shown his work locally in Palm Beach County and has also been featured at the International Symposium of Experimental Art. Through his work, Silverman contributes a distinctive voice to contemporary art, challenging perceptions of waste and inviting new perspectives on the convergence of technology and aesthetics.

About Sea Change Collective

Sea Change Collective, founded in 2024 by interdisciplinary artist and Artlife WPB Commission recipient Autumn Kioti Horne, and Artist Innovation Fellowship recipient Suzanne Ankrum, emerged from the notion that the traditional theatrical model was not addressing the needs and concerns of a changing world, a changing audience, and a diversity of artists. The Sea Change Collective is a unique performative response to the dynamic state of our world in three tributaries: Sea Change, Potential Energy Project, and Tabula Rasa. We can be found creating unique site specific performances throughout South Florida, most recently Hell is Empty and the Devils are Here, inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and created for Broward County’s Festival of the Classics. We have offered workshops and site specific performances based on new exhibitions at the Norton Museum of Art, including the incoming installation EST by Laddie John Dill, and past explorations of the work of Rose B. Simpson, have received a grant to create a site specific installation and performance at the creative reuse center, Resource Depot, and will be creating future performances based on Arts Warehouse exhibitions including the upcoming Summer Heat. AUTUMN KIOTI HORNE (they/them)

Kioti Horne is a professional artist, award-winning performer, poet, playwright, instructor and director with over 30 years experience in the field of interdisciplinary performance and visual art. In both South Florida and New York City they have worked directly with diverse audiences to foster environmental awareness as a vector for equity and inclusion and use creative engagement to help others develop a personal relationship with nature and build future advocates. They have held the roles of both Creative and Artistic

Director in multiple professional theatre companies (Inside Out Theatre, Children’s Theatre Workshop) and have helped found theatre programs for underserved communities.

Concurrently, Autumn is a certified Florida Master Naturalist working in environmental education and conservation.  They are the Education and Outreach Coordinator for Audubon Everglades, and use a STEAM approach to education, emphasizing the importance of arts in science and conservation education for all ages. It is this approach that Autumn brings to their site specific eco-theatre practice.

As a performer, they have appeared in productions worldwide, from local South Florida theatre companies such as Island City Stage, Zoetic Theatre Company, Thinking Cap Theatre and more, to aerial circus performances in Indonesia and Mexico, as well as working on many independent film and music video projects.

Presently, Autumn is the first Ambassador of Theatre Arts for the Cultural Council of Palm Beach, and a recent recipient of the City of West Palm Beach’s ArtLife commission to devise and create all aspects of a site-specific public performance, activating unusual city spaces using entirely repurposed and found materials.  They were the first artist commissioned to create a site-specific performance piece for the Norton Museum of Art’s Art After Dark program, and currently present devised participatory theatre workshops for the public At the Norton Museum once a month.

SUZANNE ANKRUM-HARRIS (she/her)

Suzanne is a South Florida theater artist who works as an actor, director, and devised-theater practitioner.  She has performed in productions at several South Florida Theatre companies since making the region her home in 2019 - including Palm Beach Dramaworks (Streetcar Named Desire and several readings), Island City Stage (Rotterdam and the upcoming June 2024 production of Skintight), and the Maltz Jupiter Theatre (Murder on the Orient Express).  Additional regional performances include

productions at the Clarence Brown Theatre, WAM Theatre, Ivoryton Playhouse, New Century Theatre, Hartbeat Ensemble, Richmond Shakespeare, and the Majestic Theatre.  She has appeared on television in Orange is the New Black and has worked on several independent film projects/commercials.  During her graduate studies she focused on physical theatre - studying the work of Tadashi Suzuki, Corporeal Mime, and more.  She is passionate about sharing her love of the craft of acting and physical storytelling – leading courses and workshops at Lynn University, Hartford University, Momentum Stage, SUNY Albany, Housatonic Community College, Middletown Circus, Hartbeat Ensemble and more.  Suzanne earned her MFA in Acting from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

Tabula Rasa’s devised eco-theatre model is unique, but based in the oldest traditions of communal storytelling.  Devised theatre can be defined as a theatrical performance created through the collaboration of a group of interdisciplinary artists where the creators are also the performers.  In the case of Tabula Rasa, we envision creating a theatrical performance that is specific to Resource Depot, using both the architecture and mission of the organization to inform the final product. This final product will be an immersive theatrical performance and art installation in and around the gallery area of Resource Depot.  The artists will have created a fully realized scripted show that will be in public performance over a run of 4-6 weeks, each Friday evening.  It will address environmental concerns and use the repurposed items available at Resource Depot for the creation of every visual aspect of the show.

Thinking Outside the Box

As part of this exhibition we hosted the South Florida premiere of "The Box Truck Film: Building A Reuseful Home", and had a Q&A with Alex Eaves and "Deek". Two builders convert a moving truck into a tiny house and mobile reuse education center. Using almost nothing but reused, repurposed and dumpster-dived materials, their triumph over junk showcases the endless benefits of the reuse life. Watch the film yourself and be inspired.

Security Unfolding -Kim Show - Title image.png

September 28 - November 2, 2024

Security Unfolding is a series of artworks crafted from discarded security envelopes collected over two years. By repurposing these commonplace materials, each piece becomes a visual metaphor for the often-hidden struggles associated with various forms of societal insecurity. Unfolding the envelopes reveals the intricate patterns originally designed to safeguard privacy. Once transformed into mixed-media collages, these envelopes contrast sharply with their initial purpose, reflecting the widening gap between abundance and deprivation. This artistic approach not only exposes the pervasive nature of everyday insecurity but also invites viewers to contemplate their own roles in creating a more equitable and supportive society.

October 13-15, 2023

Family Workshop: Paper Weaving

Saturday, November 4, 2023 - 10am-12pm

This work invites viewers to consider the potential in the everyday.  Ordinary moments often have sliver of beauty embedded in them, something wondrous peeking through if we view things at the right angle.  Ordinary objects have parallel potential, always at hand and ready to reimagined.  Creative work has the power to transform us, and this work is an invitation to rediscover the potential in the everyday materials already at your fingertips.  What wonderful worlds can be made when you rediscover the everyday and transform it?

Amy S. Broderick uses forgotten photographs, discarded office supplies, found atlases, and related ephemera to make complex paper compositions. She cuts and weaves each page by hand to make elaborate layered structures and images. Her process marks time’s passing, as forgotten slivers of other people's daily lives coalesce to tell new tales. The resulting work invites viewers to imagine a space where obsolescence and disconnection become the warp and weft of new territories.

About the Artist

Amy S. Broderick is Associate Professor of Drawing and Painting and Director of the Studio Foundations Program at Florida Atlantic University. In her studio work, she uses the processes of drawing, photography, and paper construction to note the specific topography of everyday life. Amy has exhibited her work in over 150 exhibitions since 2019, most recently in the solo exhibition, Ledger & Loom, at the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County. Amy was born and raised in Virginia Beach. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the College of William and Mary, and she earned her MFA in Painting from Maryland Institute College of Art, where she studied with Grace Hartigan.

Saturday, August 26, 2023

Did you know the first bicycle invented in 1817 was called a shiftwalker and had no pedals? Bicycles have been around for a long time and are still the most environmentally friendly way to travel. They are good for your health and a more personal way to explore than a car. To honor and encourage bicycle riding we are hosting an upcycled bicycle exhibition. 8 Artists will showcase their bike transformations.

Artist Talk with Sonya

Sonya Sanchez Arias is a true upcycler and brings new life to common items most people would look at as trash. Her work elevates reuse to the point where most observers would not know what the original items was. Sonya pours her heart and soul into her creations and Resource Depot is honored to be exhibiting this retrospective of several of her collections which showcase the breadth of her artistic skills. On exhibit are some of her Mixed Media Assemblages, Art Jewelry and Photography.

"All of my recycled art usually begins with a nagging thought, prompted by current affairs, a quote or a personal challenge. I certainly don’t pretend to have have any of the answers, but through a process of excavation and experimentation with each new piece helps me explore options for closure, and creates a deeper understanding of the topic at hand. Using discarded, recycled and alternative materials allows me to challenge the concept of beauty - for beauty to have meaning, it often needs to have a flip side of darkness. My mixed media art is created in the hope that when someone views my work in person and sees the transformation of the materials used, they will be inspired to think of the "possibilities" of recycling plastics and other alternative materials. I remind them that many of the used materials and single use plastics that would ordinarily be thoughtlessly discarded, have the potential to be repurposed and transformed into something really beautiful and thoughtful with an entirely new reason for existing.

One thing is certain, we all need to do our part and start thinking about the possibilities and potentials for alternative futures using materials that already exist all around us. I am always hopeful that through the process of excavation, discovery, transformation, and exposure, my art connects people, bringing understanding and perspectives that have the potential to challenge norms and expectations. If my work has a mission, it is this: To see the hidden beauty and potential of all things and the possibilities that a different point of view can create."
-Sonya Sanchez Arias

About the Artist

Sonya head shot bust.jpg

Sonya Sanchez Arias creates one of a kind limited edition upcycled and repurposed Mixed Media Art and Art Jewelry. She has gained recognition for her Recycled Art, both nationally and internationally. Her paper and plastic Art Couture dresses, mixed media assemblages and her various collections of art jewelry showcase her interests in the natural organic beauty of nature and the transformative possibilities of repurposing found objects and discarded synthetic materials. Sonya is a successful photographic stylist, commercial photographer, and photographic art director for more than 30 years, transforming that which others see as commonplace into the extraordinary. Born and raised in the cosmopolitan and bustling Caribbean nation of Trinidad & Tobago, she graduated from RIT with a BFA in Photographic arts and Sciences, and currently lives and works in Boca Raton, surrounded by the diverse culture of Florida’s trendy and multicultural East Coast. She credits her earliest influence to her mother’s creativity as an artist and costume maker who worked for many years with the renowned artist Peter Minshall. Her art follows the “upcycling and repurposing” movement which reevaluates the worth of waste by reclaiming and reinterpreting the beauty of discarded materials and found objects in new and unexpected ways. All of Sonya’s mixed media assemblages and art jewelry are handmade one-of-a-kind pieces. The recycled materials that she manipulates gives her mixed media work a strong identity with unique characteristics effectively making each piece a distinct work of art.

Miniature Spaces: Family Workshop
Thursday, July 14, 2022  -  5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Embroidered Felt Portrait Workshop

A colorful and dreamy exploration of the phrase "its so nice to see you" through real and imagined vignettes. Using paper maché, cyanotype, photographs, embroidery and miniatures this show explores the duality of the phrase and its sometimes humorous use.

With this exhibition Caitlin wanted to evoke a feeling of enveloping color, imagination, and intrigue while exploring the phrase “It’s so nice to see you!” It is one people often use without a thought to the duality and humor it contains. She created real and imagined vignettes of scenarios that could evoke this expression.
It’s a phrase you might even use twice in one day conjuring up highly differing emotions each time, an early morning dentist appointment begins with a begrudging “It’s so nice to see you!” as does a dreaded meeting with your boss, while seeing a dear friend or loved one later on may elicit a genuine, warm “it was so nice to see you!” Upon closer inspection of the exhibition you will see hidden mirrors throughout the scenes to play upon the concept of seeing and imagining oneself in these scenarios.
As a child Caitlin inherited a lifetimes collection of vintage craft and sewing supplies from her grandmother, and she is still using those same supplies and similar found items from Resource Depot to create these pieces. Though she studied illustration, Caitlin is often looking for ways to combine many medias and art forms. She draws inspiration from everyday life- odd chance encounters, weird signs on the side of the road, quiet places, and Florida wildlife.
