Up-Cycle
A Juried Small Group Exhibition
Show Dates - July 14, 2023 - September 9, 2023
Deadline to Apply - May 12, 2023
Did you know the first bicycle invented in 1817 was called a shiftwalker and had no pedals? Bicycles have been around for a long time and are still the most environmentally friendly way to travel. They are good for your health and a more personal way to explore than a car. To honor and encourage bicycle riding we are hosting an upcycled bicycle exhibition and looking for artist/makers to participate in this small group show.
Call to Create
We are looking for eight (8) artist/makers to upcycle eight (8) bikes reclaimed bikes from Resource Depot to create bike-themed artwork from the bikes and bike parts. Artists may choose to still keep their form and/or function as a bicycle or upcycle them into new works of kinetic art. Experience working in three-dimensions, especially restoring bicycles or cars is a plus, but not necessary. Ultimately, we are looking for artists who demonstrate creativitiy and craftsmanship in their existing body of work and are poised to accept this challenge to give these bikes a new life for this Up-Cycled exhibition.
Accepted artists will receive a $500 stiped to use for the upcycling of these bikes (examples below). All works of art will be on sale during the exhibition, with 40% of sales to Resource Depot and 60% to the artists. Proceeds go to support our mission and education programs.
Click for some idea fuel, but skies the limit! We will require a rough idea from accepted artists, but welcome with your application.

Openness to reuse materials in upcycled bike art
Media:
The bicycle is already an upcycled item, but we would like artist to incorporate 40% or more reusable, repurposed/, recycled and/or reclaimed content. Artist may come get items from Resource Depot, but do not have to exclusively use materials from us - you can source items from your home and community. It is a plus if bikes are still functioning as ridable bicycles, but in all cases any final artwork for the exhibition must be safe for the public to interact with.
Work Size:
No restrictions in size, but be respectful of the fact that this is a group show in a shared space. Also bikes must fit through door ways and transported in a sprinter van (please refer to "Our Space" section below).
Content:
We love the idea of adding features to the bike that make it more eco-friendly, like adding storage or solar panels! What ways can you improve on the design and function of your Up-Cycle? While we are open to artistic expression, we serve families and are a multi-use space & must make our GalleRe content suitable for that environment. Resource Depot reserves the right to not display any work unsuitable for a younger audience.
Selection Process:
All applications will be reviewed by a panel of 4-5 judges, judges are local artists and art professionals that are familiar with our mission. Judges will be looking to select artist that will add quality and variety for curating the exhibition. We would love to have artists /markers that can make the bikes usable beyond the exhibition. We will seek variety in the types of artists we select. We are asking for a rough idea of what you might do to the bike in the application upon acceptance.
Sales:
A commission of 40% of the selling price will be retained from all art sales. This includes those sold within 30 days of the close of the exhibit. Price work accordingly. Checks will be released for any sales within 7-10 business days of exhibition closing dates to the attention of artist at the address provided. Artist may opt to have the entirety of the sale be donated. To learn more about what we do: https://www.resourcedepot.org/ourmission
Our Space:
Our GalleRE is about 20’ X 20’ with 3 movable gallery walls, so the size does flex from one show to the next. The space has three
6' x 6' windows, which provide excellent natural light as well as a wonderful space to exhibit in. Our GalleRE has two white concrete walls and two movable drywall walls (8' x 8' each). For the concrete walls and the window spaces we have a track system for hanging, which just requires artwork to have two high positioned D-rings on the back for hanging. We have raw grey concrete floors to act as a blank canvas for emerging artists. Our Space is open air to a warehouse ceiling that is 19'. For less color interference, the GalleRE track lighting has daylight LED bulbs.
We have glass double doors that measure 82" x 69" to enter our building so items must fit through them. Outside our building we have a ramp allowing for easy unloading/loading of larger artwork, the ramp width is 4'.
